Scoliosis is a disease of the spine which affects 2% – 3% of children and over 30% of adults worldwide. The meaning of scoliosis is an abnormal lateral (sideways) curvature of the spine when viewed from the back. In children, scoliosis is a more serious disease due to the rate of progression during growth. In adults, common complaints are back pain and poor posture.
If scoliosis is detected and treated early, patients can often avoid progression and symptoms. If left untreated, scoliosis may require surgical intervention where metal rods are used to straighten the spine.
While there’s no complete cure for scoliosis, there has been major advancements in the way the disease is treated and managed with non-surgical intervention. These treatments include 3D computer-designed bracing, dynamic/soft bracing, Schroth and SEAS exercise/rehabilitation methods. Scoliosis patients live a relatively pain free and normal life with proper treatment of their disease.
