Chiropractic and Sleep
Chiropractic works on the basis of removing joint dysfunction and nerve disturbance.
What does this mean? – Abnormal motion of the vertebrae or any other joint can interfere with the
proper transmission of messages from your brain to your body and back again. This is called a
subluxation. Chiropractors remove subluxations by giving adjustments.
There are 3 stresses that can cause subluxations:
1. Physical stress – trauma, posture, the birth process, work habits, etc.
2. Chemical stress – what you eat, drink and breathe.
3. Emotional stress – family, work, money stress, etc.
The body regulates and heals itself. Does your body need help to digest food, regulate your heart rate,
and keep a constant body temperature?
If the spinal column interferes with the nervous system, it will interfere with the body’s ability to
regulate and heal itself. So, how does Chiropractic relate to sleep?
Sleep is especially important to creating a healthy lifestyle. With today’s busy pace of life, it can be
difficult to get as much sleep as your body needs.
When a person sleeps, there body repairs all of the damage to the cells that occurs during everyday life.
Just the process of walking can create micro-tears in tissues in the body. Adequate rest ensures that the
body is able to repair and rejuvenate itself.
A well-rested body is able to cope with stress in a more efficient manner. A person who gets enough
sleep has a better functioning immune system and better health.
Chiropractic adjustments help the body to function better. They also relieve physical stress in the body,
which can help to improve upon the quality of sleep that one achieves.
