Sports and Chiropractic
Chiropractic treatment can help you maintain or improve your athletic endeavors in many ways. Chiropractic adjustments help keep your joints moving properly which can help prevent injury. By keeping your joints moving properly, muscles and other soft tissue structures are not stressed due to imbalances and immobility.
Often you will find chiropractors as 'team doctors' for sports teams from elementary to professional grade. Many of these teams have chiropractors as part of their medical professional groups because they find that a chiropractor's knowledge of the musculoskeletal system is infinitely beneficial. Chiropractic treatments can help prevent minor injuries from becoming major injuries by treating the problem when it occurs. The sooner treatment can be performed, the less likely it is to have a lasting detrimental effect on the athlete's performance. Even world class bikers, racers, golfers and race car drivers use chiropractic as there means to being 'on top' of there game. In all these sports, chiropractors help keep the athlete on the field and help stop minor injuries from becoming major ones without the use of drugs or surgery.
Studies have shown that athletes that have received chiropractic care have been compared to a group of athletes that were not given chiropractic care for agility, balance, power, speed, reaction and hand reaction time. After six weeks, the chiropractic group had a 10.7% improvement while the non-chiropractic group had a 4.5% improvement. At 12 weeks, the chiropractic group' improvement was 16.7%.
With any sort of sport or activity, there is always muscle fatique and microtears (very small, naturally occurring tears) in muscles that are used predominantly. Sometimes this can present itself as "typical soreness" after activity. It is important, no matter what your physical activity of choice, to get into your chiropractor as soon as possible after even the most minor of injuries. This will help insure that proper care is taken and you can get back to your activity as soon as possible! If you live an active lifestyle, a regular visit to your chiropractor can help you maintain your activity for years to come!
